How it works

お and ご are prefixes that make a word more polite, respectful, or refined. As a rule, お attaches to native Japanese (wago) words (お金, お茶, お名前) and ご attaches to Sino-Japanese (kango) words (ご家族, ご注文). They can express respect toward the listener's belongings/actions, or simply beautify everyday words (美化語).

「お」「ご」は語をより丁寧・尊敬・上品にする接頭辞です。原則として、お=和語(お金、お茶、お名前)、ご=漢語(ご家族、ご注文)に付きます。相手の持ち物や動作への尊敬を表すこともあれば、日常語を上品にするだけの美化語のこともあります。

Formation

お + 和語(native) / ご + 漢語(Sino-Japanese) (例外あり、例:ご飯、お電話)

Examples

  • おなまえをおしえてください。

    Please tell me your name.

  • ごかぞくはおげんきですか。

    Is your family well?

  • おちゃをどうぞ。

    Please have some tea.

Notes

  • General rule: お + native (wago), ご + Sino-Japanese (kango), but there are exceptions (お電話, ご飯).原則:お+和語、ご+漢語。ただし例外あり(お電話、ご飯など)。
  • Don't add お/ご to foreign loanwords (×おコーヒー is unnatural) or to your own actions in a way that sounds boastful.外来語には付けません(×おコーヒーは不自然)。自分の動作に付けて尊大に聞こえる使い方も避けます。
