How it works

だれ (誰) is the question word for 'who', used to ask about a person's identity. The polite/formal equivalent is どなた. With particles it forms だれが (who, as subject), だれを (whom), だれの (whose), だれと (with whom).

「だれ(誰)」は人を尋ねる疑問詞「who」です。丁寧・改まった言い方は「どなた」です。助詞と一緒に「だれが」「だれを」「だれの」「だれと」などの形で使います。

Formation

だれ + particle (が/を/の/と…); polite form: どなた

Examples

  • あのひとはだれですか。

    Who is that person?

  • これはだれのほんですか。

    Whose book is this?

  • だれといきますか。

    Who are you going with?

Notes

  • Use どなた for politeness, especially to superiors or strangers (あの方はどなたですか).目上の人や初対面には丁寧な「どなた」を使う(あの方はどなたですか)。
  • だれか = 'someone', だれも + negative = 'no one'; adding か/も changes the meaning.「だれか」は「someone」、「だれも+否定」は「no one」。か・もで意味が変わる。
  • 'Whose' is だれの (だれ + の), not だれが.「whose」は「だれの」(だれ+の)であり、「だれが」ではない。
