How it works

The most basic Japanese sentence pattern. は marks the topic (A), and です is the polite copula meaning 'is/am/are', attached to a noun or な-adjective that describes A. です makes the statement polite; the plain equivalent is だ.

日本語の最も基本的な文型です。「は」が主題(A)を示し、「です」は名詞やナ形容詞について「〜である」という意味を表す丁寧な断定の言葉です。普通体(タメ口)では「だ」になります。

Formation

Noun(A) + は + Noun/な-adjective(B) + です

Examples

  • わたしはがくせいです。

    I am a student.

  • これはほんです。

    This is a book.

  • たなかさんはせんせいです。

    Mr. Tanaka is a teacher.

Notes

  • The topic-marking は is read 'wa', not 'ha'.主題の「は」は「わ」と発音します。
  • です attaches to nouns and な-adjectives, NOT directly to verbs or い-adjectives in plain form (い-adjectives take です only as a politeness marker: 高いです).「です」は名詞・ナ形容詞につきます。動詞には直接つきません。
  • The plain (casual) form replaces です with だ, e.g. 学生だ.普通体では「です」が「だ」になります(例:学生だ)。
