How it works

Marks a quotation: と sets off the quoted content and 言う means 'to say'. For direct quotes, put the exact words before と (with 「」); for indirect quotes, use plain form + と言う. The pattern Nという N also means 'an N called/named ~' for introducing names. Often written in kana as という.

Formation

Examples

He said, "I will come tomorrow."

Tanaka said (was saying) that he will take next week off.

This is a Japanese food called "sushi".

Notes

  • Direct quotes use the exact words in 「」 + と; indirect quotes use plain form + と言う.
  • To report what someone said earlier, 〜と言っていた is more natural than 〜と言った.
N introduces a name ('a ~ called ~'); 〜という is often written in kana.「Nという N」は名称の紹介で、「という」はひらがな表記が多いです。
