どうして

How it works

どうして asks 'why', requesting a reason or cause. It is roughly synonymous with なぜ but sounds a bit softer and more conversational; なぜ is more formal/written. Answers typically use から ('because'). どうして can also mean 'how' (by what means) in some contexts, but 'why' is the core N5 meaning.

「どうして」は理由・原因を尋ねる「why」の疑問詞です。「なぜ」とほぼ同じ意味ですが、より柔らかく会話的で、「なぜ」は改まった・書き言葉的です。答えはふつう「〜から」を使います。

どうして + clause + か; answer with 〜から (because)

Notes

• Answer a どうして question with a reason ending in から (頭が痛かったからです = 'because I had a headache').「どうして」の質問には「〜から（です）」で理由を答える（頭が痛かったからです）。
• どうして is softer/more conversational than なぜ; なぜ is more formal and common in writing.「どうして」は「なぜ」より柔らかく会話的。「なぜ」は改まった・書き言葉でよく使う。
• Don't confuse with どう (how/manner) — どうして specifically asks for a reason.「どう（様子・方法）」と混同しないこと。「どうして」は理由を尋ねる。
