いくつ

How it works

いくつ asks 'how many' for general countable objects (the all-purpose つ counter), and also 'how old' when asking someone's age, especially politely with お (おいくつですか). It works for things that use the 一つ・二つ counting series.

「いくつ」は一般的な数え方（〜つ）で「how many」を尋ね、また年齢を尋ねる「how old」の意味にもなります。特に丁寧には「お」を付けて「おいくつですか」と言います。「一つ・二つ…」と数えるものに使えます。

Notes

• いくつ uses the general 〜つ counting series; for specific counters use なん + counter (何人=how many people, 何枚=how many flat objects).「いくつ」は一般的な「〜つ」の数え方。特定の助数詞には「なん＋助数詞」を使う（何人、何枚など）。
• For age, おいくつですか is polite; なんさいですか (何歳) is more neutral/direct and used for children.年齢は「おいくつですか」が丁寧、「なんさいですか（何歳）」は中立的で子どもにも使う。
• Do not confuse with いくら ('how much' = price/cost).「いくら（値段・how much）」と混同しないこと。
