How it works

Attaches to quantities to mean 'X each / X apiece' (equal distribution) or 'X at a time' (gradual, repeated portions). With 少し it means 'little by little', expressing gradual change or progress.

Formation

Examples

I handed out two pieces of candy to each person.

I'm memorizing kanji little by little every day.

The students formed groups of three each and discussed.

Notes

  • Distributive 'each' (5個ずつ to everyone) vs. gradual 'at a time' (少しずつ) — both are common.
  • Differs from ごとに: ずつ focuses on the amount per portion, not the interval/grouping unit.「ごとに」と違い、間隔ではなく一回あたりの量に注目します。
