How it works

Indicates that something happens to be suitable or appropriate for a certain group/use, or shows the direction something faces. With 向き, suitability is incidental — it 'turns out to suit' that group, not that it was deliberately made for them (that's 向け).

Formation

Examples

This room faces south, so it's bright all day.

This book is written in simple language, so it's well-suited for children.

Since it isn't spicy, this dish has a flavor that suits children.

Notes

  • 向き = 'happens to suit / is appropriate for'; the suitability is a natural fit, not the maker's intent.「向き」は「たまたま合っている・適している」で、作り手の意図は問いません。
  • Contrast with 向け, which means intentionally made/targeted for someone.
