How it works

A slightly more formal/written equivalent of ~だけでなく, meaning 'not only A but also B.' It is usually followed by ~も in the second clause. Use it in writing or careful speech to add a second, often larger or more notable, item.

「~だけでなく」のやや改まった・文語的な言い方で、「AだけでなくBも」を表す。後半は「~も」を伴うことが多い。書き言葉や少し丁寧な場面で、二つ目の(多くはより大きな)事柄を付け加える。

Formation

Noun + ばかりでなく / Verb・いadj (plain) + ばかりでなく / なadj + な + ばかりでなく;often + …も

  • Typically followed by も in the second clause.後半に「も」を伴うのが一般的。
  • Also appears as ~ばかりか with a similar 'not only' meaning.似た意味で「~ばかりか」も使われる。
