How it works

Expresses that one cannot do something — not because it's physically impossible, but because of social, moral, or circumstantial reasons. 'I can't (allow myself to)...' With a negative verb (〜ないわけにはいかない) it means 'I have no choice but to / must.'

物理的に不可能なのではなく、社会的・道義的・事情的な理由から「〜することはできない」と述べる表現です。否定の動詞に付く「〜ないわけにはいかない」は「〜しなければならない(せざるを得ない)」という意味になります。

Formation

Verb (plain dictionary form) + わけにはいかない(できない). Negative: Verb ない-form + わけにはいかない = 'must / have no choice but to' (行かないわけにはいかない = must go)。

Examples

  • だいじなかいぎがあるので、きょうはやすむわけにはいかない。

I have an important meeting, so I can't afford to take today off.

  • やくそくしたのだから、いかないわけにはいかない。

Since I promised, I have no choice but to go.

  • かりたおかねをかえさないわけにはいかない。

I can't (allow myself to) not pay back the money I borrowed.

Notes

  • It expresses social/psychological impossibility, not ability — different from 〜ことができない (physical/skill ability).能力ではなく、社会的・心理的な不可能を表します(〜ことができない=能力的な可否とは違います)。
  • Positive verb + わけにはいかない = 'cannot do it'; negative verb + わけにはいかない = 'must do it / have no choice.'肯定形+わけにはいかない=「できない」、否定形+わけにはいかない=「しなければならない」。
  • Connects to dictionary form of a verb; it does not attach to nouns or adjectives directly.動詞の辞書形に接続し、名詞や形容詞には直接付きません。
