How it works

A somewhat formal expression meaning 'have no choice but to do' or 'be forced to do.' It conveys that, given the circumstances, the speaker must do something even if reluctantly. 〜ざる is an old negative form, so 得ない means 'cannot avoid (doing).'

Formation

Examples

Because of the typhoon, we had no choice but to cancel the trip.

With this much evidence, I have no choice but to admit it.

Since it's an order from my boss, I have no choice but to obey.

Notes

  • It carries a nuance of reluctance/being forced — more formal than 〜しかない or 〜なければならない.「仕方なく」というニュアンスがあり、「〜しかない」「〜なければならない」より改まった言い方です。
  • Often appears in writing, news, and formal speech.
