How it works

Used to partially deny a conclusion someone might draw — 'it doesn't (necessarily) mean that...' It corrects an assumption or interpretation, saying the situation isn't entirely as one might think. Often paired with 別に or からといって.

相手が考えそうな結論を部分的に否定する表現で、「(必ずしも)〜というわけではない」という意味です。ある解釈や思い込みを訂正し、「事情はそう単純ではない」と述べます。「別に」「からといって」と一緒に使われることが多いです。

Formation

Plain form + わけではない。Verb: 行かないわけではない。い-adj: 高いわけではない。な-adj: 便利なわけではない。Noun: 学生というわけではない。Polite: 〜わけではありません。

Examples

  • やさいがきらいなわけではないが、あまりたべない。

It's not that I dislike vegetables, but I don't eat much of them.

  • たかいからといって、かならずしもいいわけではない。

Just because it's expensive doesn't necessarily mean it's good.

  • まいにちうんどうしているわけではないが、けんこうにはきをつけている。

It's not that I exercise every day, but I do watch my health.

Notes

  • 〜わけではない is a partial/soft denial; 〜わけがない means 'there's no way / impossible' (a strong denial).「〜わけではない」は部分否定(やわらかい否定)で、「〜わけがない」は「〜はずがない(強い否定)」です。
  • Often combined with からといって ('just because...') or 別に...ない.「からといって」や「別に〜ない」と一緒に使われることが多いです。
  • Don't confuse with 〜わけにはいかない ('can't afford to'), which is unrelated in meaning.意味の異なる「〜わけにはいかない」と混同しないように注意してください。
