How it works

Describes how something or someone appears based on visual impression — it looks a certain way, though it may or may not actually be so. The complement (a な-adjective or noun) is marked with に; with い-adjectives, use ~く見える.

見た目から受ける印象を表し、「~のように見える」という意味です。実際はそうとは限りません。な形容詞・名詞は「に」、い形容詞は「く」を使って「~く見える」とします。

Formation

Na-adj + に見える ; Noun + に見える ; い-adj → ~く見える (元気に見える / 学生に見える / 高く見える)

Examples

  • かのじょはじっさいのとしよりわかくみえる。

She looks younger than she actually is.

  • そのもんだいはかんたんにみえるが、じつはとてもむずかしい。

That problem looks easy, but it's actually very difficult.

  • スーツをきると、かれはかいしゃいんにみえる。

When he wears a suit, he looks like an office worker.

Notes

  • With い-adjectives drop い and add く見える (高い→高く見える); with な-adj/nouns use に見える.い形容詞は「い」を取って「く見える」、な形容詞・名詞は「に見える」にします(高い→高く見える)。
  • Based on visual appearance — distinct from ~そうに見える/~ように見える, which add a conjectural 'seems' nuance.見た目の印象を述べる表現で、推量を加える「~そうに見える」「~ように見える」とは少し違います。
  • Don't confuse with 見える meaning 'to be visible/can see' (山が見える).「山が見える(見ることができる)」の「見える」とは意味が異なるので注意します。
