How it works

Expresses the speaker's strong conviction based on evidence or reasoning — 'must be / surely / no doubt.' It is stronger than 〜だろう or 〜かもしれない and shows the speaker is almost certain, though it is still a guess rather than a confirmed fact.

根拠や推理に基づいた話し手の強い確信を表し、「きっと〜だ」「〜に間違いない」という意味です。「〜だろう」や「〜かもしれない」より確信度が高く、断定に近い推量を表します。

Formation

Plain form + に違いない。Verb: 来たに違いない。い-adj: 高いに違いない。な-adj/Noun: 元気(だ)→元気に違いない、犯人(だ)→犯人に違いない(だは付けない)。

Examples

  • でんきがついている。かれはもうかえっているにちがいない。

The lights are on. He must have already come home.

  • あんなにれんしゅうしたのだから、ごうかくするにちがいない。

Since she practiced that much, she'll surely pass.

  • このとけいはとてもたかかったにちがいない。

This watch must have been very expensive.

Notes

  • With nouns and な-adjectives, attach directly without だ (犯人に違いない, not 犯人だに違いない).名詞・な形容詞には「だ」を付けず直接接続します(犯人に違いない、○/犯人だに違いない、×)。
  • It expresses the speaker's subjective certainty, not an objective fact.客観的事実ではなく、話し手の主観的な確信を表します。
  • More emphatic forms: 〜に違いありません (polite), 〜に決まっている (even more confident/colloquial).丁寧形は「〜に違いありません」、より強い口語は「〜に決まっている」です。
