How it works

だ is the plain (casual) form of the copula です, used to assert that something "is" the case after a noun or な-adjective. It marks plain-style speech among friends/family and is the dictionary/plain form used before certain grammar patterns. だ is NOT used after い-adjectives.

「だ」は丁寧体「です」に対する普通体(くだけた形)の断定で、名詞やナ形容詞の後に付いて「~である」と断定します。友人や家族との普通体の会話で使われ、特定の文型の前に置く辞書形・普通形でもあります。イ形容詞の後には付きません。

Formation

Noun + だ / な-Adjective語幹 + だ(い-Adjectiveには付かない)

Examples

  • これはわたしのほんだ。

    This is my book.

  • あのひとはがくせいだ。

    That person is a student.

  • このへやはとてもきれいだ。

    This room is very clean.

Notes

  • Do NOT attach だ to い-adjectives: say 「暑い」, never 「暑いだ」.イ形容詞には「だ」を付けません:「暑い」とは言いますが「暑いだ」とは言いません。
  • In casual speech, だ is often dropped, especially by female speakers: 「学生(だ)。」くだけた会話、特に女性の話し方では「だ」がよく省略されます:「学生(だ)。」
  • The polite equivalent is です; the past plain form is だった.丁寧形は「です」、過去普通形は「だった」です。
