Without doing (more formal/written)

〜しないで(文語的)

formal/written

How it works

A more formal, literary equivalent of 〜ないで. It attaches to the negative stem of a verb and means 'without doing X.' Often used in writing, speeches, and somewhat formal speech.

「〜ないで」の文語的・改まった言い方です。動詞のない形の語幹に付き、「〜しないで」という意味を表します。文章やスピーチ、改まった場面でよく使われます。

Formation

Verb (ない-stem) + ずに。書く→書かずに、食べる→食べずに、来る→来(こ)ずに。Exception: する→せずに (NOT しずに)。

Examples

  • かれはなにもいわずにへやをでていった。

He left the room without saying anything.

  • あきらめずにさいごまでがんばってください。

Please do your best to the end without giving up.

  • じしょをつかわずにこのぶんしょうをよんだ。

I read this passage without using a dictionary.

Notes

  • Crucial irregular: する becomes せずに (never しずに).「する」は「せずに」になる点に注意(「しずに」は誤り)。
  • 〜ずに and 〜ないで mean the same thing; 〜ずに is more formal and common in writing.「〜ずに」と「〜ないで」は意味は同じですが、「〜ずに」はより文語的で文章でよく使われます。
  • 〜ず alone (without に) can be used in very literary/listing contexts: 食べず飲まず.「に」を付けない「〜ず」だけの形は、さらに文語的な並列表現(例:食べず飲まず)で使われます。
