How it works

Attached to the negative stem of a verb, 〜ないで expresses doing one action without doing another, or asking someone not to do something. It describes the manner/state in which an action is carried out: 'do X without doing Y.'

動詞のない形に「で」を付け、「〜しない状態で別の動作をする」ことや、「〜しないでほしい」という依頼を表します。ある動作がどのような状態で行われるかを示します。

Formation

Verb (ない-form) + で。書く→書かないで、食べる→食べないで、する→しないで、来る→来ないで。

Examples

  • あさごはんをたべないでがっこうにいきました。

I went to school without eating breakfast.

  • でんきをけさないでねてしまった。

I fell asleep without turning off the light.

  • しんぱいしないで、わたしにまかせてください。

Don't worry — please leave it to me.

Notes

  • 〜ないで modifies an action ('without doing X, ...'), while 〜なくて typically expresses cause/reason ('because not...').「〜ないで」は動作の様態(〜しないで…する)を表し、「〜なくて」は原因・理由(〜ないので)を表すことが多いです。
  • 〜ないで can also soften a request meaning 'please don't' (心配しないで).「心配しないで」のように依頼(〜しないで)の意味でも使えます。
  • It is more conversational than the formal equivalent 〜ずに.文語的な「〜ずに」より会話的です。
