~にする/~くする

How it works

Expresses that someone intentionally changes something into a certain state. Use ~にする with な-adjectives and nouns, and ~くする with い-adjectives. Contrast with ~になる/~くなる, which describe a change that happens on its own.

人が意図的に何かをある状態に変えることを表します。な形容詞・名詞には「~にする」、い形容詞には「~くする」を使います。自然に変わる「~になる/~くなる」と対比されます。

Formation

Na-adj + にする (きれい→きれいにする) ; Noun + にする (半分→半分にする) ; い-adj → drop い + くする (大きい→大きくする)

Examples

  • うるさいので、テレビのおとをちいさくしてください。

It's noisy, so please turn the TV volume down (make it lower).

  • へやをきれいにしてからおきゃくさんをよんだ。

I tidied the room (made it clean) and then invited the guests.

  • さとうをいれて、もっとあまくしましょう。

Let's add sugar and make it sweeter.

Notes

  • な-adj/Noun take ~にする; い-adjectives drop い and add くする (高い→高くする).な形容詞・名詞は「~にする」、い形容詞は「い」を取って「くする」にします(高い→高くする)。
  • Emphasizes an intentional, deliberate change made by a person — contrast ~になる/~くなる (a spontaneous change).人が意図的に変化させることを強調します。自然に変わる「~になる/~くなる」と対比してください。
  • Note the separate ~にする meaning 'to decide on' (コーヒーにします = I'll have coffee), which is a different N5/N4 usage.「コーヒーにします(選ぶ・決める)」という別用法の「~にする」とは意味が異なります。
