How it works

Used to introduce or define the name of something/someone, or to present the content of information, thoughts, or speech. With a name it means 'called/named X'; with a clause it means 'that...' presenting what was said or thought.

人や物の名前を紹介・定義したり、情報・考え・発言の内容を提示したりする表現です。名前に付くと「〜という名前の」、文に付くと「〜という内容の」という意味になります。

Formation

Noun (name) + という + Noun. Clause (plain form) + という + Noun/こと/うわさ etc. 「田中という人」「合格したという知らせ」。

Examples

  • 「のだめカンタービレ」というマンガをよんだことがありますか。

Have you ever read a manga called 'Nodame Cantabile'?

  • たなかさんというひとからでんわがありました。

There was a phone call from a person named Tanaka.

  • かれがしけんにごうかくしたというしらせをきいて、うれしかった。

I was happy to hear the news that he had passed the exam.

Notes

  • With a name, 〜という introduces something the listener may not know: 「ABCという会社」.名前に付く「〜という」は、聞き手が知らないかもしれないものを紹介します(ABCという会社)。
  • After a clause, 〜という + noun (こと/うわさ/知らせ) presents the content of that noun.文の後の「〜という+名詞(こと・うわさ・知らせ)」はその名詞の内容を示します。
  • In casual speech, という often contracts to 〜って (田中って人).話し言葉では「〜って」と縮まることがよくあります(田中って人)。
