How it works

Two related uses: (1) to make a suggestion or offer ('how about ~?'), and (2) to ask about the state, impression, or quality of something ('how is ~?'). The noun is marked with は, followed by どうですか, the polite question form of どう ('how').

二つの使い方があります。(1) 提案・勧めを表す「〜はどう?」、(2) 物事の様子・感想・調子をたずねる「〜はどう?」。名詞を「は」で示し、その後に「どう」の丁寧な疑問形「どうですか」を付けます。

Examples

  • おちゃはどうですか。

How about some tea? / Would you like some tea?

  • あたらしいしごとはどうですか。

    How is your new job?

  • にちようびはどうですか。

How about Sunday? (suggesting a day)

Notes

  • いかがですか is a more polite (keigo) version of どうですか, often used in formal or service situations.「いかがですか」は「どうですか」のより丁寧な(敬語の)言い方で、改まった場面や接客でよく使います。
  • When suggesting an action rather than a thing, use the verb's ます-stem + ませんか or ましょうか instead, e.g. 食べませんか ('how about eating / shall we eat?').物ではなく動作を提案するときは「ます形+ませんか/ましょうか」を使います(例:食べませんか)。
  • Casual speech drops です: 〜はどう? どう asks 'how/in what way', while どんな asks 'what kind of'.くだけた会話では「です」を省いて「〜はどう?」。「どう」は様子を、「どんな」は種類をたずねる点に注意。
